Never was an SVT Contour w an ATX.
Dealers/Sellers lie once in a while.

Ford never makes an automatic anymore that can take the torque of anything but the standard engine. By not offering automatics in souped-up models, they severely limit the buyer base since not everybody wants a stick. They sort of learned this with the SHO Taurus, but I guess forgot with later cars like the SVT ones. A pity.

Actually, the SVT would be a dog by comparison with an automatic, it isn't a very torquey motor at lower rpm. They probably did it because the performance they get wasn't worth putting the SVT name on it. Look at the Taurus motor, one of them is a duratech and puts out more power than an SVT stock.

The reason the SVT didn't come with an automatic is that it was billed as a "driver's car", and if you aren't shifting gears, you are just along for the ride. Besides, in a performance car, an automatic will simply lose more power in the drivetrain than a manual shift.
One of the reasons I bought my SVT is because it was not offered with an automatic. So when I see another one on the road, I know the person behind the wheel can actually drive. No offense meant to anyone the drives a slushbox, but I personally like to be able to choose the gear my car is in at all times. My wife's car is NEVER in the gear I want it to be in.

Most RWD automatics are bulletproof IMO. Quite a few drag racers run with beefed up autos. Mustang mags have lots of ads for race prepped Ford C4's, C6's and others.

GM's TH-400 is one h@ll of an auto! Ive seen one accidentally shifted to reverse in a >400 lbft tq car with true posi while going forward at 30 mph. (69 Riviera with the 4 barrel 430) Result? A dual wheel reverse burnout and RAPID deceleration with no obvious signs of damage to the tranny. IIRC one of the Ferraris used the turbo400 tranny in it?
