I have a 98 contour 2.0lt automatic. My o/d light flashes at about 45mph. also the trans wont shift between 1st & 2nd gear unless i take my foot off the gas when the cars rpm is high in first gear . please help thanks!! mrtjknapp

Welcome. It sounds like a VSS. Look at the previous post for more info on how to check and clean, etc.

Yes, I apologize. I was in a rush to a meeting and that was what was on my mind. As I was at the meeting, I realized, the first thing to do was to check the ATF to see if the level was correct (not too low or too high). Then to see if it is a "nice" clear pink color (buy a quart of Mercon $2.50 and compare). If it is closer to a brown or if it has been more than 30 K miles since it was last changed, it might do well to change the ATF and see if that helps.
But if the VSS is bad, it could cause erratic downshifts and the OD light flashing. If there is a CEL, it might be good to get that scanned and have it posted.

My only experiences with a bad VSS have been on a manual transmission. It caused my car to idle very low, and would stall on downshifts sometimes and my friends SVT had no effect at all. Just a dead speedo. I guess every car takes it differently.
But like you said Tony, I would check the fluid first.

my atf is not bad. the car has 128,000 miles on it.what is a vvs? As you can tell im new at fixing cars. Thanks

Vehicle Speed Sensor
It plugs into the side of the tranny and that is what makes your speedo work.

I replaced the vss and it didnt do anything. I should also mention that when I go to pass someone and give the car gas the engine wynes it sounds like the tranz is in neutral. so i have to back off the gas. can anyone help??? thanks mrtjknapp

It didnt work. The car when you go to pass someone and you give it gas, it sounds like it comes out of gear and the engine wynes big time. when you let off thr gas its ok. this happens at any speed. any ideas? thanks, mrtjknapp
