The temp gauge on my 97 4cyl, MTX Contour refuses to work. I installed a new temp sensor in the housing near the thermostat, also installed a temp gauge I removed from a junk yard wreck. Any other ideas?

Near the temp sensor is a temp SENDER. (they look alot aike. one mounted at a 45degree angle, the other vertically) completely seperate from the sensor, etc, and only controls where the guage reads. This is likely your problem, and had nothing to do with the sensor.

I just ran out to look at the thermostat housing and only identified 1(one) sensor/sender, it comes out verticle, nothing at a 45 degree angle. Could the sender be mounted somewhere else? On the radiator maybe? Thanks for your help Ray.

Temp sender is on the bottom of the thermostat housing. Yours may look different but it should be in the same location.

Temp sensor that sends the signal for the ECU is on top.
You want to change the SENDER, not SENSOR.

Found it! Thanks for the great help. I will change the sender and hopefully that will take care of this issue.

Thanks Again
