Any one remember having to modify an ear on the transmission side to get the SVT oil cooler metal lines to fit up against the block? I'm working on a 2002 Sable engine right now and I tried to put the oil cooler on but this massive ear on the bock was in the way. I just hacked it off but I find it odd that I've never had to do that before.

Another thing I noticed on a different 2002 3.0L Sable engine is that this one has this huge coolant drain plug in the back of the block. I unscrewed it because I didn't know what it was and coolant started dumping out. I guess it is handy if you want to empty the coolant out before you take the heads off. Still that is different than any of the 3L blocks I've worked on.

There seems like there are quite a few different versions of the 3L.

Chris,

I always remove that ear. It's only needed to be removed if running the SVT oil cooler, but I do it on all of my motors. Otherwise it doesn't hurt anything. I'm sure if you look at your engine you'll notice that ear isn't used by the MTX to mount to. Just pull the locating dowel out of it and pop it into the hole just up and right of the one you're cutting off.

Yes. I've had to cut off an ear on the earlier blocks and on the later blocks I still had to cut a channel to pass the coolant tubes in the same position as on a 2.5L.
This is one reason the '01 escape block works so well, minimal cutting and it ends up looking just like a 2.5L block.

Not sure. Earlier Taurus/Sable motors were significantly different. Maybe after 01 they standardized them a bit more? I know the taurus needed that extra mounting ear to fit the ATX though.
As I think of it, there is no way possible that the oil cooler lines from an SVT could fit flush as in stock without that extra piece of metal being cut out. Maybe at an angle.

Yes, since the WP is in the same location on the Escape 3L as it is on the 2.5L

Well I was able to track down those lines from a Ford Dealer. $90. I'll mod my block or get em from a junk yard I think
