That's retarded. He had someone, his freaking G/F no-less, there to drive him home, but he drove home drunk anyway.

People need to take responsibility for their own actions, it is that plain and simple. He has to pay for the action that he took in drinking and driving. In this case it is that he might not live or be paralyzed. Other times it might be someone else who is killed. Either way, it sucks but that is life. We don't live in a perfect world because none of us are perfect. Would I be upset if someone I knew was killed because of a drunk driver, you bet...but that is how the world works. You can only educate people, make tougher laws, and hope that people follow that. If they don't, they have to live with what happens to them. At first when I hear of something like this I do feel angry that someone would do something so stupid, but then I realize we all have made a mistake and I hope that they recover. If someone is killed, someone has to live with the guilt of what happened for the rest of their lives and for most people that is punishment enough.

He apparently said he was "Fine to drive". I'd throw that [censored] in jail for allowing him if I had the chance.

WTF, you'd throw her in jail. Like the guy is her infant? Dude, you are not right. Sure she's an idiot for not stopping him, but he's the one at fault here. He's a grown man and can make his own decisions.

Alright look... I'm sorry. No, it's not her fault at all. Stazi, you're right. I'm just really emotional at this moment and it's VERY difficult. I'm just trying to figure out WHY and HOW and all the other [censored], becuase this whole situation still makes NO sense to me. I've always thought of him as my 2nd father. Loosing Scott regardless of situation will be a traumatic situation in my life. Yes, [censored] happens and you move on, I know.

this doesnt tell me if he was stumbling drunk (which i doubt) or just a little tipsy or what. this is a significant factor imo. for all we know, a dog ran out in front of his car which caused him to swerve in avoidance. obviosly alchohol would cut down on your reaction time but this kills sober people as well. im not excusing your friend's having drunk alchohol and then driving but we havent been told the level of intoxication here. like reasonable people dont go home from a restaurant after having one drink. get in an accident and suddenly youre a drunk SOB condemned to death.
regardless of fault, i am glad that no one else was injured and hope that your friend makes a full recovery. im sure he'll have learned his lesson from that one. and please, if this was an uncle or your own father, i doubt so many would be quick to write him off as deserving of all this. you'd be right at his side crying "why God, why?!" i doubt if your mother were to call and tell you that your own father or uncle or brother were in a severe accident after having driven while under the influence you'd say "ah screw the bastard ma, he deserves to die"
go ahead, flame me for having compassion for someone who is on their death bed because of a mistake, one in which no innocent persons were injured.
