The outside does look like an SVT UIM. Very smooth. Don't know what could remove PC other than sandblasting though. If there is a chemical for removing PC let me know because it has to be some serious stuff!!!!

Todd a hot tank dip/acid wash should eat right through the powdercoating. Isn't ther a code on the motor to tell if the motor is from a svt? Does the vin come out for a svt? That would be my first checks.

While a motor check would work, the VIN would be useless, if the car was an svt that had a standard duratec replacement.

Didn't only SVT's also have black valve covers? I know my SE has unpainted aluminum covers, whereas this engine they seem to be powdercoated.

The part about throwing away the LIM due to excessive build-up is a bit suspect... mine had 1/8" of carbon buildup when I did my first cleaning, yet came off quite easily with about 3 cans of Berrymans. Are people really just that lazy???

Oh, and I know this has nothing to do with engine type, but having spark plug wires laying across the engine like that looks just plain fugly.

Nope. Pre98's had black valve covers as well.

Normal iron hot tanks will EAT aluminum though!

The code is on the valve cover. Unfornately that's easy to swap to a non-SVT engine. (it's happened several times before )

Yes the SVT has a unique VIN code.

2000 SVT #674 13.47 @ 102 - All Motor! It was not broke; Yet I fixed it anyway.

request a picture of the inside of the UIM behind the TB....non-svt will have a very rough texture and a sharp point where the two main runners merge, the svt's are far smoother and thet ridge is knocked down by the extrude honing.

A fresh can of gel stripper from your local Lowes/Home Depot is capable of stripping powdercoating. It may take three or four applications to do so, but it will do so.
