you'd be surprised, when you commit calculus/physics stuff to memory, you'll see a problem and say "gee, I could do this and that and figure it out...". do you really wanna pull out a pen/paper and do it? no, but it's nice to know you could

a lot of young teenagers get ignored though. some math teachers just assume "you weren't listening" in the lower math classes (by lower I mean seniors taking alg 2 instead of smarty little sophmores taking alg 2, like I was )
some people just have a problem with numbers, but a lot of teachers are fed up with students not caring and wasting time, they're blind to those that don't fall into that category.

but yes, some people are just plain ignorant and uneducated.
