Did you get your oil changed at a quick lube place recently? It's possible they added fluid, mistakenly, because they didn't have the engine running while in the bay.

I would drain the fluid off, until the level reads correctly on the dipstick. Be sure the engine is running, in Neutral and at operating temp. See how it does from there.
