IMO it now boils down to this: Which is worse, your tighwad boss being slightly mad at you irrationally (which I'm not even sure he would be - it sounds like he may be having an ethical dilemma of his own), or you becoming an accomplice to child porn by not telling the cops and making a backup of said porn? No-brainer, dude.

My boss looks at it in this way instead of my way. He figures if it has no effect on him and nobody bothers him, then theres no reason to make a fuss about it.

I say bust him when he comes to get the computer. To hell what your boss thinks. This is a morally correct decision. Call your cop friend and have him there when he picks the computer up, then bust his ass. I think that is very disgusting, and he needs to be sent to jail.

Make sure you fully document everything that you have done. Make sure that it's extensive about the work carried out too, as well as your boss' reaction. Also do this NOW, while it is fresh in your mind. You might well need it at a later date for the cops.
Then report this guy, I believe there is a specific place to report child porn nowadays.
Then I would start job-hunting ... I personally would never tolerate working for someone who doesn't seem bothered about finding child porn! There could well be hidden files on there with addresses of little girls & boys this guy wants to meet. It's not something that should be ignored, or taken lightly by your boss. This shows A LOT about his moral standards!
