All depends on the shop. Not every shop tries to screw you and most are smart enough to not say something like that.
funny I got something like that once, was picking tires out and the guy wanted to sell my toyos, there were right there but I wanted teh dunlop sport a2s and he goes why do you want those and i said because others how have them on their cars say they are happy with em, and I was
so  to that guy
I would go to tirerack and use the tire selector and go from there, read the reviews also
