It's not that cut and dry.

If found in time and after inspection of the crank it could possibly be saved.

Been there done that (in my SHO that is).

If you have a problem with your rod bearing then your engine is toast! Your engine should be producing a very loud knock and you won't be able to drive. If your bearings are toast then so is the crank. Time for a new engine.
