My SVT is in the shop again so I went to Galpin and looked at the Jaguar X-type sports package. Let me tell you it's a nice looking car. My dealer said he could get me in it for about what I am paying for my SVT right now. I need some feed back from you guys. I'm 25 years old, am I too young to be driving a car like this? It's sporty but different from the SVT. It's really a luxary car with sports features,3.0 engine and a 5 speed. I probably will be getting something to replace my SVT in the next few months and have looked at the IS300, the A4 and now the X-type. I may wait around to see what the RX8 will look and feel like but the X-type has me thinking....

I would drive an IS 300 over an X-type anyday. It's not that I don't like the Jag, but for the money, the IS 300 is a much better car. The Jaguar is over priced and out performed by other cars in it's class. It is a nice car however.

I sat in an X-Type 5spd at the Chicago auto show, and was pretty impressed. (sitting still, anyway. ) The shifter felt even slicker than the one in the M5 (again, sitting still...), the car felt pretty comfortable... I say test drive it and see what you think. And no, you're not too young to drive a Jag... I'm 26, and I'd gladly own an X-Type if I could afford it. (no other Jag though, at least until they start making some more manuals.) --T.J.

I personally don't care for AWD unless it has about 350+hp. But, you are right about the style. The X-Type looks like a $50k car and some of the competition doesn't. I replaced my SVT in December and the Jag dealer wouldn't give me the time of day (also 25). Did all the research, test drove the cars, ended up with an IS. For the money, it fits me the best. You can pick one up for under $30k with the stick and all options (save NAV). I love my car. It doesn't look as luxurious as some of its competition, but one test drive is all it took for me. Pure fun with a some luxury features. I had it and the SVT for a couple months and the quality is worlds apart.
Before you buy, go look at the Infinity G35. Automatic for now, but 6-speed coming. If you like everything else about the car, the stick will be worth waiting for. And I already have two rotaries so the RX-8 intrigues me as well, but gotta wait until Jan 03 for that one. Caddy CTS might be worth looking at, but I don't like the interior. If you can do 2-doors, the Acura CL-S is nice, but still FWD.

The X-Type looks like a $50K car on the outside, MAYBE, but the inside isn't up to the price they're charging. Another one of those cars where the price climbs far too rapidly when you add options which should have already been included in the base price.
If a loaded 3.0L were about $8000 cheaper, I could recommend it, but it's not a $45,000 car.

Wait until the G35 Coupe arrives. That's what I am doing: 275HP, 6-speed, nice sport look and styling. It's a 2-door though but you're young!
If the test drive is positive, this will be my next car (may 2003). Between the X-Type and the G35, in my opinion the choice is clear...

I saw the G35 at the Baltimore Auto show! I wasn't all that impressed. I would take an X-type over that and the IS300. Both are too mainstream. There are few cars like the Jags. I might be compelled to wait for the X-type R if it ever comes out!

X-type is more luxurious (inside and out), the IS is a better handler, and both are down on power compared to the competition. The G35 is ugly. The Bimmer is where it's at, if you can afford the price of entry.
