the manual says 5.8, most people run 6, roush did a test that concluded it was safe and recommended to run 6.5 qts in the duratec.

Not true. More oil does NOT mean more pressure. The reason you can run too much oil is because you may bathe the crank eventually. This does not happen at 6.5 qts. in the Duratec.
And engines do not get "used" to anything, especially not the amount of oil.
There are several major decisions outlined in the FAQ. What oil to choose, how often to change it, what filter, and how much to run. The first three depend on a lot of factors, and can vary from person to person. The fourth is 6 or 6.5 qts. Not 5.5, not 5.8, certainly not 5. If you corner your car hard (or anyone else does), run 6.5. Otherwise 6 is fine.

Last time I changed the oil, I put 6 quarts of Mobil 1 in. Now I honestly don't remember where the oil was on the dipstick. How far above the xxxxx mark should the oil be? An 1/8", a 1/4", how far?

I think it should be pointed out that "hard" is a fairly subjective term. Some have seen problems with as little as a 3K(rpm) entrance to an onramp (cloverleaf).. Others have had multiple track days at higher than 4.5K and never had a problem. "Hard" simply wouldn't be enough of a catch-all to describe it.
It depends on the lateral forces on the car.. the engine revs, the length of time IN those two, and a combination of all three.
6.5qts is NOT a cure for this, either, as perhaps has been alluded. Running 6-6.5qts is a preventative measure, nothing more. Same thing with taking it easy on sweeping, tight, hard (or any combination of the three) turns.. doing both would be better.. running an accusump/moroso/etc would be a third addition that would provide the most protection. NONE of the three individually will be "great"...
