Lately, I've been hearing a chattering sound while driving. While on the road I can really only hear it when driving along a solid object such a houses or a wall. It's been going on for about a week and I think it might be the timing chain. Yesterday, I was revving the engine a little bit to see if I can here it and sure enough it was there. I think it might be the timing chain but I'm really not sure. it only does it when the car is warmed up. I have a feeling this won't be a cheap/easy fix so before I bring it in I want to get some advise. thanks guys

I think I have the same issue. It clanks from idle to about 3k rpm at a constant rate depending on RPM?

Simple fact of the matter is, we can't hear it for ourselves, so it's difficult to diagnose over the web. Could be rod bearing, main bearing, chain tensioner, cam pulley, or even something as cheap & simple as some loose catalyst material from the precats rattling around in your exhaust.

I'm inclined to think it's the latter, just because I'm an optomist.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

True. Unless the engine has lots of miles or has been overheated, the timing chain is seldom prone to problems.

can anyone else back that up? I suppose that's good news then cause what I was hearing sounded more like a chain. I guess if I don't have one, I can look somewhere else. I like the loose catalyst theory. I did have an engine light about a year ago that read a bad bank one cat. never did anything about it tho, passed smog test and everything. Hopefully this is the problem and it's an easy fix. well, relatively easy.
