i strongly disagree. most people have a tendency to be closer to the middle than you think.
it's usually when the few try to polarize the many and force them to be "with us or against us" that people drift to further to ends of the spectrum. this is why we need a stronger 3rd party and also why a moderate candidate could run away with the '08 election.
