I usually try not to abet Davo's thread highjacking, so forgive me. This deserves to be aired out.
In a previous thread, I said that very few criminals in history have caused more harm to more people that Bernard Ebbers (head cheese of WorldCom, recently convicted of defrauding thousands of investors of over $11 billion).
Davo replied by saying that I was ignorant of history.
I said OK, Davo, tell us which white collar criminals in modern history have caused more harm to more people than Ebbers.
Davo never named any. He only named Hilter, Stalin and Pol Pot.
Here's the point, Davo: Even if you want to include the bloodthirsty dictators of history (not a good idea, since Hitler's and Stalin's atrocities were not violations of criminal law, and they were never convicted of any crime), there are still only a few . So what do you think I should retract?
Ian't it amazing that Davo is arguing that Ebbers' crime was not really that bad and his 25 year sentence was too harsh? The guy ripped off $11 BILLION, for christsake, and destroyed thousands of people's jobs. He wiped out a lot of people's life savings.
The right-wing used to stand for law and order. But now, apparently, it stands for leniency for corporate crime.

I hear lots of stories about killers being released after 5 or 10 years behind bars. Seems to me that people taking a life should get sentences more harsh than a white collar criminal.

The point isn't that Ebbers should get less than 25 years, the point is that murderers should get more than that.
And regardless what does that have to do with me saying that me being conservative doesn't mean I have to agree with Davo

And this was an attempt to try to diminish my point that Ebbers is not one of the greatest criminals in history. The qualifying of your previous statement does not mask the stupidity of it.

You should retract that you think Ebbers is one of the worst criminals in human history. It's bogus, yet convenient, for you to claim that since they weren't convicted of crimes then they weren't criminals (this coming from someone who thinks Bush is a war criminal). But speaking of criminals, would you argue that Ebbers' crimes were worse than the dozens of Nazis convicted of atrocities? Yeah, people lost jobs and money because of Ebbers but they weren't exterminated.

What's even more interesting is that I never said that. The argument I made in that thread was that the penalty for the child molester was obscenely lenient.

Compared to the crimes of Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot, Ebbers doesn't rank very high. But nobody said it wasn't serious. That's just you missing the point and making things up yet again.
Oh, and IIRC, it was ME who first brought up that Duncan, the child molester who kidnapped Shasta and killed her family, got a light sentence the first time he raped a child, so if you're going to [censored] out someone, [censored] me out.
