i posted this in zetec maintenance for more replies cause he needs to make a decision quick!

my friend's 99 zetec has a broken timing belt and now the shop said his valves are bent and its gonna cost about 13-1400 dollars to fix.

should he just do it or find a new 2.0 to drop in??

Lots of replies in Zetec maintenance. My opinion is put on a new timing belt. (Unless the head is off and the valves ARE bent) The consensus is the Zetec is non-interference.

My 2000 Contour SE stripped teeth off of timing belt and I didn't have any valve damage. But I may have been lucky.

These engine do not bend the valves when the belt fails, at least that is what I have read.
Call the ford dealer and find out if this is true. If so, then your shop is lying to you.

Since when is the Zetec an interference motor? Maybe one of the sprockets might have a tooth knocked off, but I don't think a bent valve can happen.

I checked with BigJim ex service manager for a dealership and here is his reply to the question " Is the Zetek a no-interference engine?"

Quote:

"It is a non interference engine. The likelyhood is very small that there will be engine damage when the timing belt breaks."

It is possible to bend valves in the Zetec according to this posting in the Zetec Maintenance section:
http://www.contour.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=zetecmaint&Number=1005556&Main=1005556

Probably best to try a new belt first.
