i noticed the other day that my dashboard right in front of my defrost vent is shrinking back or melting. has anyone else experienced this?

If you're talking about the defrost vent itself, there was a TSB for this and a repair kit that Ford came out with. It pretty much consisted of the vent being removed and a different style screwed down in place of it. I know this was for at least the 2000 Contour, and probably the '99 also.
I think it's a pretty big job if you have to do it yourself, as the whole dash needs to be removed.

I've got the same pronlem with my 2000 SVT. I'm not bothered by it too much and from the post above it really doesn't seem worth the time and effort.

I didn't have a choice with mine. The whole thing warped so badly the vent popped completely out of the dashboard. Fortunately the stealership replaced it under recall...

I had the same issue with my '99 SVT. The vent completely popped out of the dash. I had it replaced under warranty about 2 years ago. Just recently it happened again and finally last weekend I just removed the vent because I was tired of it bouncing around on the dash. the dash is completely warped. I wasn't aware that there was a recall on it. When was the recall issued and will dealerships still honor the recall?
