My friends 95 zetec has been having problems with a messed up idle, lurches low and back up alot. CEL comes on occasionally, but goes away before you can get the codes read. Apparently he's had some problems with the EGR in the past, so he's thinking about cleaning it, and I'm gonna help him.

So how do you clean the EGR, and how hard is it?

I don't know much about the EGR, and what I found searching didn't seem to answer my questions. I'd like to know as much as possible about this before doing it, and right now I know very little. Any help is appreciated, Thanks!!

Even though the CEL light is not on anymore you can still get the codes they are all stored until battery is unhooked or you delete them.

Oh, cool, I didn't realize that.
Unfortunately neither the autozone nor advance auto in his town can read OBD-1. We could read the codes our self though I guess.

I found some threads about cleaning the EGR, but the pictures have turned to red x's.

Also that FAQ link to reading OBD-1 codes doesn't work. I tried it like 50 times. It'd be nice to read the codes on my friends car, but nowhere around here can read OBD-1.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks Roger! That exactly what I was looking for, somehow I could find it though.

So now we can read the codes! However, we're still gonna clean the EGR, so I could still use a little info on that if possible. Thanks

I think maybe if we have time we'll try to clean his IAC too, just in case that has anything to do with the problem.

The haynes manual actually has some decent info about the IAC, and suggests cleaning it even though ford says you can't.
