If you aren't experiencing pinging, or the like, switching to premium (with a car not designed to use it) will likely not affect anything in the area of "extenders" Intermittent codes should be addressed by a thorough cleaning/maintenance of the intake tract, fuel filter, and lastly by running cleaner through the injectors, etc (basically, anything that can intermittently stick, leak, or clog)
re: codes
Intermittent codes are NOT stored until you clear them.. they are stored until the predetermined "Drive cycle" is completed. Some are as much as 80 starts, others 40, or 3. Each code is independant.
re: scanners.
If you own a laptop, then look in to Alex Pepper's OBD-II software. You already have the "scanner hardware" per se, you just need the software from the site.
www.obd-ii.com I believe..
much, much, much cheaper than the Autozone scanners, though if you prefer to hold the scanner in your hand, they are a good thing to have.
What he said.
Ray, I changed the fuel filter last month, cleaned the air cleaner housing, put in a new air filter today. I will try cleaning the fuel injectors later today. Thanks.

The CEl stays on with my mystique. It's been that way for three years (nearly 60k miles during that time). I've reset it too many times to mention, and it always comes back on after 10-20 miles. I've had it checked at autozone, I've had it checked at Ford, and I've checked it myself with a multimeter. Nothing. No codes. I've kinda gotten attached to that purty li'l yaller light.

but then you think, when will you ever know when something really IS wrong. oh well, I'm holding on to a dream that my car will be "perfect" forever. maybe I'll just put tape over it.
If the car runs fine and I dont have codes behind this stinking CEL than I'm not going to worry at all.
