All,

After much searching of the forums, can't find a definitive answer for this question: I have a '98 Contour MTX with a toasted 2.5L ... will the later model '99-'01 2.5L engine pretty much just bolt right in? The only thread I found on this subject went on and on about whether or not the fuel system was returnless, and whether that even mattered, without reaching a definitive conclusion. (My assumption here is that there are only two basic variations of the Duratec 2,5L, the '95-'98 model, and the '99-'01 model).

Thanks,
-pmb-

Late 99 MY they decreased displacement from 2544cc to 2499cc. At this same time they went to a returnless fuel system. (not an issue because it's all external parts)

Any 96+ engine will work for you.
There are some benefits from getting a newer engine. Lower miles, revised pistons, better sensors, supposedly better rods from a process change, very late model engines supposedly got revised heads, etc...

Thanks for that info. Would that then be the "DFT3" engine designation?

Read up about a 3L swap. It is usually close to the same price as a 2.5L.
