Late 99 MY they decreased displacement from 2544cc to 2499cc. At this same time they went to a returnless fuel system. (not an issue because it's all external parts)

Any 96+ engine will work for you.
There are some benefits from getting a newer engine. Lower miles, revised pistons, better sensors, supposedly better rods from a process change, very late model engines supposedly got revised heads, etc...
