And given the fact that import cars are keeping a higher resell value than domestic the Mazda is looking like its on the leader board.

Like I said this is all speculation and things may change over the next few months but thanks for the input guys.

I still like the idea of getting a newer cheaper car and then modding the tour.

Since when is Mazda an import?

Most of the Mazdas aren't foreign anymore(?)(correct me if I'm wrong), they used to be before Ford bought them out. Then they got better.

Yes that was my point. Ford has owned Mazda for a decent amount of time.

IIRC, Ford owns a minority stake in mazda. Something like 25%-35%. Much of the hand waving is still from Japan, especially the design and engineering.

Well apparently its enough stake where it is on Ford's website as part of their vehicle lineup.

apparently? i'm not disputing that at all. it's a "partner" company, not a wholy-owned subsidiary like Lincoln-Mercury. they have their own staffing, their own management, their own engineering, etc.... and the head honchos are in Japan.

Ok, I see what you are saying now. Heck even most strictly american cars are influenced greatly from overseas.

i'm not sure what you mean, if you want to go that far, there's no such thing any more as an "American" car or a "German" car or a "French" car any more. they're all global brands now. Contours were designed in Europe, made in Mexico, and shipped to Canada. Is that still an American car?

My point is that MOST of what is put into a Mazda: design, engineering, marketing, management, staffing...is Japanese. roughly 1/3 of the bottom line $ goes to Detroit. and some parts and platforms are shared along the way. that's very different from Ford and Mercury where the cars are designed, engineered, managed, and built in the same place.
