1996 mystique - 2.5 L v6 duratec with 62k mi. on the clock.

Experiencing classic water pump failure symptoms as described in numerous posts.

Yesterday I purchased a duralast water pump from autozone part no. AWP-9075. It has a lifetime warranty, but comes with a black plastic impeller. I recalled a post that said to buy either metal or one with a specific color plastic, but couldn't remember the color while at the store.

Is this thing total crap that won't hold up since it's black plastic?

I sent my wife to NAPA this morning, but she said they only had plastic impellers so she didn't buy one. The NAPA website shows that the impeller is a white plastic.

Any help on this would be appreciated. I inherited this car from my parents and will be passing it on to a friends elderly parents and want to give them something reliable.

Get the housing as well, not jsut the pump, trust me.

I disagree with SVTDriver.

Here's the scoop:

Black plastic is likely to fail in another 60,xxx miles. Be ready to change it before this. It WILL work, but not reliably after those miles (don't use it longer than that)

White plastic.. will work much much longer.. there HAVE been a few white plastic failures, but I can count them on one hand at 100,xxx + + + + miles vs the 363,536,738,267.8 failures of blacks.

Metal impellar ones can't shatter, but they CAN leak around the shaft, etc. Some have experienced this problem, most have not.

Your call but I recommend the white plastic, personally.

As long as you collected all of the pieces of the impellar from the broken one (try to piece it together like a puzzle) you are fine.

The impellar half is all you need. If you can't find all the pieces, or are unsure at all, flush the system as documented fairly well in the maintenance how-to FAQ to ensure no pieces become lodged (preventing flow anyway)

I agree with Ray, the NAPA Duralast part # 125-1910 is the metal pump. I have installed two and had no problems. Don't waste your money on a part that has proven to fail. White plastic or metal only.

I have had 2 99 V-6s and both had the white plastic impeller from the factory. Lots of high revs & spirited driving. No problems at all.


Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Thanks for your advice!

I'll buy one from Napa with the white impeller and return the autozone pump.

Hopefully tonight I can flush out the system and get the new pump bolted on.

Once, again, I still disagree.. IF he can find all pieces of the impellar, etc. No need in the extra expense, and MUCH extra time required to replace the housing.

Unless he was experiencing leakage from the two, or the housing is somehow broken/warped/gouged to not allow a good seal.

The pump has finally been installed and the car is working fine! The pump housing was ok, but certainly an item that should be inspected. I went with a white plastic impeller on a pump from Napa.

Thanks for some great advice!

I replaced my stock unit over the weekend with the BAT pump with the metal impeller. The old pump had a white plastic impeller and looked to be intact with no damage. My E1 SVT was built in Feb. '98, so not sure if that date is somehow indicative of when Ford switched from the black to the white impeller. The install went pretty smoothly - the most time-consuming part was scraping the old gasket from the housing. After 133K miles, the two had become rather intimate...!
