Hi guys,

I've been thinking and working on making my own skirt. Don't call me crazy yet because every body else has. Since I fixed my front bumper (after an accident) with fiber glass I started thinking that it would be easy to make your own skirt using fiber glass.

Starting May I made a mold and added metal brackets on the side of my car which will hold the skirt in place. Originally I was going to make one big piece and attach it using the bracket. The problem is to reach the bracket I would need to extend my fiber glass by 7 inches. The problem with fiber glass is that it can becaume expensive if you add several layers and having just one layer is just not enough so I've changed the way I was going to do it.

Now what I'd like to know is if anybody else knows another non-expensive material that can be used for such an operation?

I'm hopping to succed because there's simply no skirts available for the Contour (At least, not a big selection).

Please feel free to give me your input on this subject. I'll probably post some pictures once I have something to show...

Afraid I can't help you on the material. But I do want to wish you luck, and make sure you keep us updated.

JoAnn Fabrics has a wide variety. I'd go with a silk because it'll show off your rear end better IMHO. Fiberglass is kind of itchy. laugh

I guess I'll go with the Fiber Glass solution. It's sh***ty but eh!

Instead of having 7" of fiber glass to hang on to my brackets I'll make it 3" but instead I'll extend the bracket to come and reach the side of the car...

I'll be working on it intensivelly this weekend so I'll post some pictures of the progress next week.

what about those beads of plastic that can be melted down and formed into any shape you want. Model Railroaders use it to make water and stuff. Never used it myself.

Currently: 2002 ztw focus wagon, black, manual. Yippee it sucks!!

I am molding a set of sideskirts on my gf's tour as soon as they come in. They are made for another car, are made of fiberglass, and will look very sweet on the car. they are getting molded on too so there will be no seam between the ground effects and the car. will be starting the project as soon as the sides get here. i am going to make my own lower valance for the rear bumper, mold it in place as well instead od doing an svt rear on her car. will look very unique

Sounds all fine and dandy to me; I'm all for it, but fiberglass and ABS injection molded plastic (most every other plastic for that matter) don't get along to well. Gonna be a bugger to get a good bond and not melting the plastic in the process. Not saying its impossible, just thinking outloud. Have a 40 hour composite materials (kelvar, CF, etc) course I took in A&P school (FAA airframe & powerplant mechanic) and screwed up lots of stuff due to chemical reactions.

Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis.

Custom will defintely give you that one of a kind look.

Factory option:
Speaking to the great Bill Jenkins, from Sentry Auto Parts, today, Bill told me SVT Side Skirts are currently being offered for around $65 unpainted per side. He said add $60 per side for paint.

Wouldnt be custom, but much less work!
