i may be shopping for a new DD soon.... and i'm wondering if there are some cars i'm forgetting about. i'm looking for a car that will be an everyday car that i can take to work, and also take clients in....

here are my must haves...

must seat four. four doors preferred.
must be good in the winter. (awd preferred)
must be able to be easily (i say $2K or less) bumped into the low 13's, yet still retain everyday useability and reliablilty.
must be realistic... nothing more than $40K msrp to be honest...
can't be ricey

so far, i'm thinking...

S4
subie legacy GT
gto (but winter drivability is a big ?)
maybe a wrx... but it would have to have the deleted wing

what i'm not considering

wrx sti
evo's

ideas?

S4 will cost you $$$$ to get into the low 13's - modding Audi's is not cheap
The Legacy GT (turbo) is nice, I'd consider that or the WRX.
The GTO will SUCK in the winter - just as bad as a Mustang.

With your limitations I think you only have two cars to choose from, unless you want to cram your ass into an SRT-4, or perhaps look at a 1.8T GTI

2000 SVT Turbo 295hp/269ftlb@12psi #1 for Bendix Brakes Kits! Knuckles rebuilt w/new bearings $55 AUSSIE ENDLINKS $70 Gutted pre-cats $80/set A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine!

OK, if $2k is your ceiling on mods then there is only one option: WRX

Get a 2002-2005 Audi A4 1.8T save much $$$ from the S4 and I will hand you a low 13 sec car with the $$$ you saved no probs. GT28RS is all I need to say.

And Audi's are reasonably moderate cost wise to upgrade, I would say not much more than the SVT I had but instead you get hard bones performance like REAL 20awhp at a time instead of counting 3-4fwhp at a time improvements.

oh yea, plus you will be officially a PIMP and let me tell you if you have a girlfriend it would kinda suck with all the honeys you will pull in with a Audi as oppose to the Ford I had.

If you can afford it get a 2004 or 05 it comes with a 6 speed like what I bought. 2002-2003 comes with 5.

2004 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro 6spd \ GIAC FXKO3 Software \ AudiTT 225hp 386cc Long Neck Injectors \ Valentine One HArdwired \ S4 Lip Spoiler, 18" HP Evo on 245/45/18's \ Bailey's Diverter Valve \ Stasis Streetsport Coilovers \ APR Full Exhaust.

I thought the Evo (although not on his wanted list) was easier to mod than the Subbies?

well, an evo is already at the performance level i'd want.... but it's too garish for me to be hauling around clients in.

the A4 option is a possibility though. i wonder how reliable they would be at that power level.

Sorry, I had a 1.8T Jetta and well unless you reaaallly like your dealer, I wont own another. Once a month that car had some stupid problem, like the windows falling of track (twice, both front windows). Coil packs failing (4 packs per car, i think we had 6 fail) Some sort of exhaust leak/failure before the turbo. Constant CEL's, traction control staying engaged when in a drive through?? All types of crap you may not want with a DD.

When we bought the car, I was really impressed, 6 months after that the problems started and kept on going till we turned it back to the dealer. On the ride to turn it in, the CEL came on again.....

how's the new car been treating you? i've always liked those... though i'm not sure of the modd-a-bility of them.

I can relate in opinions. I love how 'up to par' with competition the Evo comes stock, but it looks like something you would get in a McDonald's happy meal. When you have a profession that involves meeting with clients and picking them up to & fro Airports, Hotels, etc, you need some class in your ride.

I have always liked the Audis and Bimmers ever since world class car chases in movies such as Ronin and the Bourne series became popular. The 6-Speed Infiniti G35 is always a good option, and the sedan (about 260lbs lighter than the coupe), runs a 14.1 stock, and can get you into the 13s with only I,H & E. Hooks well for a RWD too, specially if you get it with optional LSD. (That might be my next project BTW )
