Oval cones CANNOT move in a linear fashion. Why? the resistance is not equal all around the cone its just the nature of having to move more area on the long side of the cone. this is true eventhough the cone has the same rubber ring all around it flexes more like a lazy M when its. excited. to me it makes sense because the area that you are trying to move is greater on the long side of the oval shape than on the short side from center.

Does it matter? not for Voice sounds because voice is more like noise(multiple frequencies)and you probably cant hear the distortion.

But for Bass its a different story. since bass can be locked down to only several low frequecies, when there is distortion or the signal is not purfect you will hear it.

i guess its why most mids and highs are oval because it does not matter that much SQ is affected but not by much. if you buy really high end mid/high speeakers they will probably be round. they reproduce evenly all around the cone

and subs are round.

i could be wrong

The last line in your post was correct.
