Since my tranny does mostly work and I'm told its problems are heat-related, maybe the cost-effective thing to do is put on a tranny cooler and just nurse it along until the rest of the car is used up. Better than putting $1500 into a car I paid $1250 for, I'm thinking. Who makes an affordable CD4E cooler kit?

you can get some decent ones from either Jegs or Summit Racing, and there not expensive at all. well worth it.

Stack plate designs are more efficient. Do some searches with the term "tube and fin", "stacked plate" or just "coolers". You should come up with plenty of reading material.

Thanks Mr. Martin for the part number.

Tube and fin looks attractive enough to me when it's that big and that cheap... I mean, this is not a high-performance application here, this is a "it just has to be better than nothing" application. I suppose the plate style doesn't cost much different, though, does it?

Now I just need to understand how to connect the hoses in the right place.

I'll probably stick a fan over it because the tranny can get warm while just idling at stop lights.

Has anybody got a picture of a tranny cooler installed in their ride?
