If you have the defrost on and the temp is above a certain temp (probably around 40-50 degrees F.), the A/C compressor will run to take moisture out of the cabin.

Yes, it is true. When either of the two defrost modes are on (windshield only and windshield/vent combination) the A/C is on so that it can more quickly remove moisture from the windshield.
