It's significant ... check your gas mileage with/without to see the drain. In my wife's ATX she gets around 500km/tank with air ... without air we were getting closer to 600km/tank ... this was mostly highway.
Personally I find people like your monster=in=law (nice term bty) to just be noisey little whiners who can't live outside of a 'pre-conditioned' environment ... I grew with no AC and only got it on the Tour and never had it in my home until I moved in with the (now) wife. Doesn't bother me too much and I never needs so I'm happy ... damn, better stop as this is turning into a rant!

This guy was telling me not to run my A/C over 60mph because its too much for the compressor. I dont know if thats true but i listened to him.

I'd just like to say that since the summer has started, I don't think I have turned the control switch off since I fixed my A.C.(Replaced resistor pack as it was blown). My gas mileage is up and actually at it's best since I got my car, a little over two years ago.. I also have not really noticed any effects on my acceleration as I do drive rather aggresive .

its psychosematic.. you're losing mileage and power.
oh... and re:not using it above 60.
that guy was a tool. why isn't there a speed limiter set at 60mph?
Quite frankly: in stock form, there isn't much you can do to a car to damage it; they are designed to perform (in all aspects: redline, temperature, speed, etc) within their intended specs.

Actually the A/C unit on our car SUCKS ASS. When running it robs about 20-30 TQ and the subsequent HP based on rpm. It's a steaming pile of inefficiency.
When it's not running is uses zero power.

It's not really all that bad. Traveling home this morning my car ran great with the A/C on. Acceleration was still strong at 120 MPH but that was as fast as I was willing to go. It easily could have gone 130 MPH with the A/C on, and maybe more. I was on a trip and returned this morning from northern California to southern California on Interstate 5. No, I didn't travel that fast most of the time, but I had it that high several times. That section of road travels so fast that you will be run over if you are traveling less than 80 (in some spots 90). The car was running well (as usual), and I'm sure that I could have easily hit the advertised 143 MPH limit (probably would need the A/C off though).

I think it helps to slow the engine down if you are turning on the A/C at speed. I'm not sure that I would bother if I were driving an auto trans car, but with a stick, if I want the A/C on while underway, I will throw in the clutch and allow the engine to idle down before turning on the A/C. Then I bring the engine speed up slightly gradually instead of quickly poping the clutch back up.
If the A/c has not been on for a long time, the refrigerent oil tends to settle out. If you were to engage the A/C at high revs when there is little or no oil in or near it, it may throw a rod. That is one of the reasons that the A/C runs during the winter during the defrost mode, to help keep the oil distributed. It also helps to dry off the inside of the windshield.
I don't agree though that you need to turn it off above 60. See my above post.

Just yesterday I drove from Lexington (home) to Indianapolis and back. Once on the interstate (most of the trip), I ran a constant 75ish and got 26.6 MPG. There is a very noticable loss of power with it on and it seems like the tranny takes for freakin ever to downshift unless you really mash the gas. I'd guess at least 10 HP goes away when the air is on. The gas mileage is usually better by 1 MPG with it off and highway driving....2-3 around town.

I find it is low end power that is consumed (cars become bog slow in traffic). If you stomp the gas, the a/c will take a rest for a few seconds. That's normal. The automakers certainly know the a/c needs to shut off when full power is needed. The a/c allows long road trips in hot weather and actually hearing the radio at highway speeds (and beyond!) A great invention, if it is working Maybe driving the compressor electrically would lower drag IF the power consumed is less than mechanical drive. Some hybrid cars have that type, I think.

Huh???? Big Jim, are you saying that the A/c comes on when I have the heat (button turn to red) on and blower switch button on the defrost? Could you please clarify? Thanks.
