Lou,
I have actually discussed this with my girlfriend and she agrees to save both of ourselves that we'll be getting a pre-nup. I was surprised when she agreed as I figured most girls see "pre-nup" as "doomed to fail".
I'm not saying that everyone who gets divorced didn't try working it out, or didn't do this right etc etc. I'm just saying it seems more often people are getting divorces then celebrating marriage and love. I for one am waiting a long time before we get married. I dont need a peice of paper to tell me that I love someone. Haveing said that, I do want our "special" day together as well.
Sorry if I offended anyone. If you divorced and you had kids, more power to you. Most people think staying together for the kids is better then divorce, WRONG! I hated the fact that my parents were together and telling me stories and b!tching about eachother. Esp when my mom was having an affair and she told me all about it. sh!t like that is not good for the kids.
Anyways, I'm sorry people on this board are divorced, but I'm freaking happy as hell, and see no end to that for a while. However, if it does you can dig up this thread and say "I told you so".
again, who ever is happier divorced then married, congrats to you

Hey Chris. All of this stuff is news to me with being a newer member here and having not met any of you guys yet,but I wish you the best, and hope you and your kids are happy.
My parents split up when I was 3,and my mom was having an affair with a guy at work, and that guy has now been my step dad for 16 years. Atleast he's a good guy and we get along,so I can't complain, but it still hurts me inside that my parents had to split up,especially so short into my life. My mom took my dad to the cleaners for all he was worth and he's been pretty much screwed ever since she left him,and the sad thing is that he's the innocent one in this situation. Oh well, life takes it's twists and turns and you just have to take what's thrown at you and make the best of it I suppose.
Again, sorry to hear about the split up,but as long as it was the right thing to do and it works out for everybody in the end, then more power to you.

I wondered if you were going to comment, Lou. Funny how so many of us have been through this.
I work for a law firm and see first hand how bad our legal system is especially when it comes to family law matters. I refused to work in family law because it is so bad and unfair. We have go so far to the left that woman basically have all the rights and men have nothing and there is really something wrong with that. I know many men that are going to be paying spousal support for the rest of their lives to their ex-spouses. They make more money in spousal support per month than I do working my butt off.
Anyway I don't want to start a rant here. You don't get married thinking your gonna get divorced. I never figured I would and I did.
But life goes on and well it is all the ex-spouses loss.

Laura, I can say this much, I came out pretty good, could have been worse. I didn't get taken too badly, given how well her lawyer "fondled" with our debts and assets to make it appear in her favour. No matter what, I had assets, she only had debts, and you know how that works, the person with the assets gets screwed every time. About the legal system, because I was a responsible spouse, saved lots of money for my kids and me, I was penalized for that, and why, she maxed out her debts, and in the end, I had to pay for half of her debts, again, because of the legal system. Nice huh, I strived to save, she strived to spend, she has gigantic debts, I still have to pay, and that is even with debts only in her name (ie credit cards). How is that fair? The law sucks, I still have the remainder of my lawyer's bill to pay.

We should talk sometimes you came off pretty lucky from the sounds of it in the legal stuff.
But you can't dwell on this stuff or it will eat you up, move on and make this all history.
Yes our legal system does suck especially with family law stuff. As I said I WILL NOT work in that area. (I sue people instead hehe) it is way to emotional and most of the time I would side with the men which would probably not go over very well with a female client. Unless of course they were being reasonable.
When I separated/divorce I was very reasonable and we worked things out ourselves and we didnt need to involve lawyers and it was very easy to do but most people get way too emotional and can't do that.
Hey just think in 10 years you where you will be.

Snafu - Hang onto her - she sounds like she's got a good head on her shoulders!
Chris - The whole asset/debt thing is so true and oh so unfair. I truly believe one of these years there'll be a class-action lawsuit against the government when fairness and sanity will hopefully rule the day. Until then I'm keeping all my "evidence" in a safe place.
Laura - It's refreshing to see a woman who sticks for what's right and doesn't just ride the gravy train along with most others - I applaud you for that.

I'll say this much, I tried to work things out amicably, without lawyers, but my ex felt in her mind that by using a lawyer, she would end up with more.....not.
