I remember my friendly dealership offered to install a 'black box' when I was suffering ferocious bucking when downshifting into 3rd at high speed (literally like one of those 'ride the bucking bull machines'!). Apparently it could either be triggered to capture full data when the CEL comes on, or with a button press.
I presume this is the same thing, and it was offered to me either with diagnostics if it was frequent, or for a small fee and I could drive with it for a week, to capture data when it happened.
