If that was part of the NAFTA 'concept' (I don't recall ever hearing about that part), it has not been implemented. It would not surprise me if the European manufacturers (not counting Ford Of Europe) supplied common-spec vehicles to all three (technically 4, since there are two emissions regulation bodies within the States) markets. Ford is too obsessed with cutting corners to do something sensible like that.

Mercury dealers would end up putting Carriage roofs on Mondeos.

I read it somewhere. Maybe it was part of the original "package" that was dropped or some dimwitted reporters misinterpretation, who knows.

Irizar, for instance, a European Bus manufacturer (part of the SCANIA group), now builds buses in Mexico (they were sold in the US briefly, imported through a company called Metro-Trans in the US. Metro-Trans went bankrupt last year). The Mexican-built Irizar Century buses comply with all applicable US Department of Transportation regulations, allowing the busses to cross the border without the usual DOT hassles and even leave the door open for possible importation, so the building of a European sourced vehicle in Mexico that complies with US regs is not unheard of. Of course it's kind of like apples and oranges when comparing cars to commercial vehicles but I think you get my drift.

One problem is that by the time they could bring the Mondeo here, they would be close to the next generation. Supposedly, the Mazda 6 will be used in Europe for the '05 or '06 Mondeo.

Also, there is a rumor going around that the '05 Focus will get a V6 like Jettas do. confused I don't believe it, but who knows?

When I first read about Ford bringing the new Mondeo to the U.S. I was excited. smile

Then went I went to Ford, U.K. online and saw some pictures I decided that with the wheel arch creases, it just looks like a big Focus.

Maybe I'll wait for something else.

go to www.ford.com.mx that means there is one for North America just not USA. Would be cool to import one at $24000 it not bad but you couldnt finance and what bout import taxes. Would be cool cause you would be very unique. If you want unique you could go for the Ka at bout $11000 too. Dont wanna be just another Honda Civic or Toyota Camary!!!
