"Importing the Mondeo could trigger problems with the UAW because Ford is expected to close several North American plants, industry sources say."

Evil unions rear their ugly heads again. mad

I say do it anyway, and stop letting the unions have undue control over the company.

As much as I would like to blame the union for this one, there were other reasons why this investigation resulted in a red light. I've seen a copy of the 'official' internal letter and it didn't even mention the union concern.

Vehicles built for the Mexican market typically do not meet U.S. regulations, particularly for safety (poorer bumpers if that can be believed, and no air bags are typical). In the case of the Mexican-market Mondeo, I don't believe that it meets the U.S. emissions requirements either.

I think part of NAFTA (if NAFTA is ever fully implemented)is to harmonize the regulations so that cars from Mexico could be eventually imported as easily as Canadian cars. All Mexican cars have emissions control equipment now (even the old Beetle) and leaded fuel is no longer sold, although the "el cheapo" fuel might as well be leaded, since it is full of so much crap!wink

Besides, you all know that even if they imported the Mondeo, it would be so watered down and yakeefied that it would be no more European than the Caddy Catera.
