anything projection isnt going to have the same quality of a picture tube set, thats a given. RCA has a horrible repair record.
Sony is nice, but your paying for the name (not always a bad thing)
Go buy a Consumer Reports guide to TV's, if someone will tell you the truth they will.
out of all of those - i would go for maybe phillips

I would go with the 30" Sony, best picture quality out of those four. I believe the 30" HS comes with the Super Fine Pitch CRT but I could be wrong.
Samsung makes some nice TV's as well

Look at Toshiba too, they make a quality product. While Sony is good, I've heard some stories that their quality isn't what it used to be. I agree, stay away from RCA and GE products. I thought I read somewhere that Thompson electronics sold those brands to the Chinese. Also consider Mitsubushi if you're looking at projection models.

Actually I have heard Dish Network has a better picture then Direct. They also offer more Hi Def programming.
PS- Do not forget about those cables

You're not trying to get us to by into the Monster Cable myth, are you? Wire is wire.....as long as speaker cables are adequate guage, its all OK. I don't subscribe to the theory that high dollar cables are any better than standard cables. Its just low voltage signal.

Holy crap, $800+ for a 30" tv?! I don't care how much Sony thinks they are the end all of electronics, thats just insane.
Also, you have 2 CRTs and 2 projection. They are almost 2 different animals, even though we are talking about them both being TV's. Projection is going to give you a huge screen, at the cost of the quality of the image you see. If you want projection, that is one thing. If you want a good picture quality, CRT is the way to go and I would go with the Philips. However, if you are looking for a projection with a good quality, Mitsubishi makes a good all around unit. RCA makes a good higher end product, their cheap ones (the one you picked out) are just that, cheaply made. And yes as previously stated they were having some quality issues with their projection screens. Also with projection you are going to have to worry about getting someone out to your house to re-focus and adjust the TV after a little while if you want to keep the best quality.
The Philips also has HDMI inputs which can be a good thing if you ever get the chance to go digital cable or Dish Network.
Let us know if you want a projection TV or a tube tv and I think we could be of more help at that point since thats a decision only you can make. Be warned, with your $1000 budget finding a good projection could be hard, while you can get an awesome tube tv with that budget.
Oh and BTW, my post count is 1776 on the 4th of July hehe

If your gonna get a HI-DEF tv you do not want to get one that is not widescreen. if you do its not true high deg as hi def is 1080i and when you get a non widescreen (4x3) you can only get up to 720p and there are very very very few 720p converters out there. most cable companies dont use 720p they use 480i or 1080i with a 4x3 you can not get 1080i with a widescreen 16x9 you can get 1080i and thats what you want. 720p or 480p is awesome if you have a progressive scan DVD player though. most people by progressive scan dvd players and think they are getting a much better pic but really the only way to do that is if you have a progressive scan tv which is a tv capabile of 480p and 720p
Trollin the boards as of 9/23

But isn't most standard TV programming going to be 4:3 for several more years? By the time true hi def is mainstream, the first generation hi def TV's are going to be worn out. If you get a widescreen model now, and watch mostly broadcast reception in 4:3 format, isnt' there going to be major burning in on the picture tube?
The only format that seems safe is LCD.
