Picked one up myself, and love it.
Philips 30" Widescreen Refurbished
this looks like a pretty good deal...I'll look into it.
I've heard a LOT of people say that Phillips is an absolute b*tch to deal with when things break... and while their TVs are nice tech, I've heard that the quality is suspect...
While I don't disagree, at that price its practically disposable! I was looking for something to get the Sox games before upgrading to a bigger TV. I'm planning on moving at the end of the year, and didn't want to deal with a 50+" TV when moving.

A 26" lcd tv weighs about 30 pounds. That's why I like LCD tvs. They can be wall mounted so they don't take up much room. Also you can connect your computer and have a huge LCD computer monitor.

I really have no desire for high definition TV. I just wish I could get a clear strong signal with high enough resolutation to make the most of my standard TV's abilities. The standard NTSC signal is about 280 lines of resolution. My TV is cable of over 400 lines of resolution. I get a great picture on DVD, and I would be content to get that kind of picture on broadcast. But with cable, usually I can't even get a clear a signal as on a strong local station using an antenna.

get the Sanyo HD flat screen 32" - I have it and LOVE it!
Ps - for all those that dont understand:
4:3 is perfect for the majority of programs that are not in HD, around most of the country 80+%. Sanyo offeres the exact same picture tube in a WS 30 inch model, but why watch normal TV at a 4:3 screen sive of like a 20?? and the 16:9 is within 1/4" of each other between the WS 30 and the square 32"
16:9 - is also supported and when you have an HD signal it automatically switches to this format with a "letterbox" format. The cool thing about the Sanyo is that it doent waste resolution on these dark bands - it really does go to 16:9 - not 4:3 with black bands, it actually only projects the 16:9 and the rest is simply not used.
The only drawback to this tv - ONLY - it that its stock speakers dont sound all that good for igh powered effects, but I run a nice home theatre system so I dont mind much. Sayno is one of Comsumer Reports top brands as far as quality and lack of repairs, it is cheap and available only through walmart at this time. This is cool because if you have any problems at all you can take it back within 1 year for no questions asked.
Anyway - any other questions - let me know I can tell you all about this TV.

Hey Horse, where did ya buy that Sanyo at? I know Sanyo TV's are rated very reliable in Consumer's Reports, and I had an old Sears/Sanyo 19" TV back in the early 80's that was great. What kind of money are we talking for the one you got?

I paid like $749 IIRC only available from walmart (some factory deal on the HD sets walmart for the first few years only) It has all sorts of things like built in HD tuner ect - but be forwarned - its a heavy bugger!
I got mine last year - I think the same set is now at like $649 or cheaper.
Edit: walmart.com

you should shop around because you could get a quality flat screen television, not hi-def or anything, no special nothing for just a few hundred bucks depending on size and some of the flat screen tv's now, can deliver a great picture with something like basic digital cable....picture quality is a def plus over analog cable...

One word: DirecTV. The picture quality between DTV and cable was like going from UHF with a coathanger antenna to cable. I'd NEVER, EVER go back to cable, and I love my DirecTiVo almost as much as my wife...

Yeah, I would love to have satellite TV, but my neighbor's tall trees directly to the south of my property line will make that forever impossible. We have digital cable available, but its provided over the fiber-optic phone line, so it won't work over the coaxial cable jacks. New wiring would need to be run throughout the house, and that would be difficult, how that the house is built and has no access from the basement or anything. Life just gets harder.....grin!

I've narrowed the field to these four:
RCA 52"
Sony 46"
Philips 30"
Sony Wega 30"
I can finance for 0% until '07, and don't want to go over $1K. What do you guys think?
The RCA is a huge TV for the money, but what about quality? Haven't heard anything about RCA quality. How do the Sony rear projection units look?
