The hypothetical challenge:

You all get bone stock 99 CSVTs, they all make 165hp at the wheels per dyno X and are all in good running order. You can keep the CSVT and you get a date with [insert favorite celebrity here] if you bring the car back to dyno X within 90 days and it makes 10% more power for the least cost of any person taking the challenge, subject to the following rules:

1.The car will be checked completely by 3 experienced techs so no cheating;

2.No Nitrous;

3.All labor is charged at $50 per hour no matter who does it (even you), the amount of labor will be assessed by the 3 techs at the rate it would take a regular mechanic to do the mods;

4.The price of all parts will be assessed at MSRP;

5.No one off gimmicks to get more power just for the one dyno run, the techs will verify that all the mods are reliable and long term modifications that meet the laws (i.e. sound laws)in a jurisdiction that has NO emmissions testing; and

6.The make and specifics of the mod must be described i.e. â??2.5 inch exhaustâ? is not a sufficient description, it must be something like 2.5 inch mandrel bent dual exhaust from the test pipe, through two Borla turbo style straight through mufflers.

K&N with heatshield ($40) (4FWHP)
Optimized TB (Free) (2FWHP)
Optimized stock Y-pipe ($75-100) (4FWHP/4-6TQ)
Replace resonator with a muffler and delete rear mufflers ($150) (4FWHP/TQ)

There's $300 tops and will give you the best bang for the buck. Also those gains are throughout the powerband and not just peak.

Still have more cash. Skip the stock exhaust and get a Trubendz 2.5" Magnaflow exhaust. 6-7FWHP for ~$400

Probably looking 175 to maybe 180FWHP & ~155FWTQ. (All depends how FUBAR'd your stock A/F is!)

Toss in a chip/tuner ($300-450) and you are looking around 185/165. (better if you add in $100-150 for dyno time) If you want to cheat and take the below IMRC TQ around 170ish if they remember to boost the low end timing.
With a good tune 190ish / 170

add in labor time for that "free" TB opti., but other than that, I agree with most of what was said.

(except taking the <IMRC tq.. that sounds like cheating to me.. )

So you agree with me it's a pointless reading because it's not in a usable performance powerband or you disagree with me because you missed my statement.

Assumes clean intake system, new plugs, wires, fully functional engine:

1. Open filter - $40 (requires MAF adapter)
2. Maf adapter - $20
3. remove resonator and mufflers, swap to straight-thu muffler(parts+lab) - $130
4. eManage - $275 + $40 lab, Total - $315
5. Dyno Tune - $100, (tune lean to about 13.7:1)
6. Octane booster on top of 93 ocatane fuel (nos outlaw) - $12

Grand Total = $ 617

For best results if you have more cash:
** Headers+y-pipe, weaponR - $400, Labor $250, Total - $650
* Chip versus eManage, +$250 increase in price over eManage and dyno tune.

New Grand Total = $1517
