Does anyone know the extent of the drivetrain warranty on a 95 mystique? I'm getting a grinding noise on startup sometimes. I'm always one who expects the worst so I assume already a flywheel problem. But who knows. Just wondering. The ford website no longer mentions 95 vehicles.

Your warranty ran out while I was in high school. I think you're hearing the timing chain, it's very common on the V-6. No worries if it's a clattering/grinding that lasts for a few seconds after you start the car, and only when it's been sitting a while.

When should we start worrying?

When you buy a Ford. I'm in constant fear that something is going to break, and I'm going to need to do something in that sardine can Ford calls an engine bay.

My number one reason I'm looking for a Miata: If it breaks, I can lift the car up with one hand and work on it with the other.

The grinding is before the engine turns over, the sound is the sound you would hear if you engaged the starter with the engine running, except the engine isn't running.

"When you buy a Ford." Too late for us now (LOL).

No, seriously! When should we worry about this timing chain problem?

I've also read about this and according to Ford, it's not a problem, just the way it works. It sounds bad, but it is the way it is...

Read the link: it's fine. If it bugs you, buy an Accusump. It'll fix that problem and the much more serious oil starvation issue. Search and you'll find tons of info.

I would think it's a sticking starter assembly, but I've never had this one apart so I can't be too much help there.

The link doesn't seem to work for my computer.

But I will take your word that it is fine. No, it hasn't happened on mine yet. I just wanted to know so that WHEN something like that happens to mine, I will know when to worry and when not too. Thanks.
