I've rigged my tripod as a "passenger". I'm using the passenger seat belt as a hold down strap, with a car-seat seat belt friction holder to keep the tension on the belt. I've lengthened the three legs to meet the floor/tunnel around the passenger seat.

It appears pretty sturdy, and will test it out on the drive to SpringZing. Hopefully it will be allowed on Gingerman and the AutoX.

I was just wondering what others do for solo, in-car video.

I've seen guys (Mustang) put the tripod in the back seat. 2 legs behind each seat (driver and passenger) and the 3rd leg fit snugly into the middle of the seat. (between seat and back cushion)

Hold everything down w/ a couple of straps and the seatbelts.

Not sure if it'll work w/ a Contour though...

Also, few places on-line sell tripods and some sort of attachements specially designed to go in a car. Don't remember where though... IF you Auto-X a lot, might be a worthy investment...

EDIT: This *might* help... http://members.cox.net/mkpl/carmount.html

Best one I saw used the headrest poles as for mounts. Basically it extended off of the passanger seat headrest to the middle of the car where the camera was mounted

I was thinking of that too, some of that box steel with the holes in it. Perhaps I'd have to open a few of the holes to get it to line up with the brackets on the head rest.

Or just go with stock that doesn't have the holes and drill them in the right locations.

I took a piece of 2x2 (i think) that we had left over from building our deck (the vertical pieces for the railing) and drilled a couple holes for the headrest posts and then modified one end so that a window mount for a camera will clamp on. i took it down some twisty roads to test it and it seems to work great. sorry no pics, so i hope the description works for ya.

Mine is ugly as ph-uck, but whatever works. I just threw it in to take some pics of it, when I have it in for Gingerman I will use the seat belts and maybe a bungee or two to hold the tripod.

It's actually much sturdier(sp?) than it looks. The tripod holds the camera, and the wood bracket holds the tripod, and the seats hold the wood laugh .....and like I said, when the seatbelts and tie-downs are added, it doesn't move....hopefully wink

My wife keeps Bitchin', saying that the camera is going to go through the window :p
