But, some people can't tell the difference between single stage and base coat/clear coat. Also, depends on the shop. I've seen some pretty decent single stage jobs and I've also seen some that look like it was sprayed with a rattle can.
Best thing for you to do is go down to the shop for yourself and see the work that they're putting out and if it'll satisfy your needs.
You said it all. I'd also suggest trying to find a car similar in color to what your will be painted. Sort of a preview. DO THE PREP WORK YOURSELF! and if you can't do it right, 2k ain't so bad. It's going to run me about 4k for my T/A.

yep, that reminds me. single stage paint. no clear coat i believe, or maybe just one. mine looked nice, although it was white. the other cars i saw there looked ok too. for a few hundred more you can probably get a real paint job from a real shop. i would go to many places and get some estimates. you may be suprised at what you can find. stay away from the shops that do lots of collision work or look reallllly nice, theyll charge a lot. try to find someone who knows what theyre doing and needs the work. i know there are guys who do it out of their homes and some will rent a booth to do it. saves big $$. but then again, where i live there are about a billion paint shops. maybe take it to a voc ed school and get it done for peanuts

Actually, single stage paint has the clear mixed in with the paint.
Don't know what part of town you're in, but you could also hit up local car shows and speak with the owners. Most of the time the cars on display will have info on where they may have had the car painted. Hit up classic car shows, lowrider shows, euro shows, etc. til you find the paint job you like and want.

Er, no there are dual stage lacquer paints. Most rattle can crap is lacquer based paints.
Enamel is a single stage paint, like Testor's model paint. It's an OLD school paint that was used in the 60's.
Good quality dual stage paints from H.O.K, DP, SW, or even PPG are all acryllic urethane and is what every current auto manufacture uses. Some even have tri-coat paints that uses 2 different color base coats before clear to get the correct look. Mazda and a few others use them on a few select models.
Bottom line: You get what you pay for.

so how much are they charging you?????????and you may want to read the fine print about their warranty....i bet there's a catch to it.....i wouldn't let a place like anywhere near my car......you get what you pay for when it comes to paint, warranty or not...i would look elsewhere if you are keeping the car....

Your car, your money, you pick where you want to go. The warranty does sound nice. Be sure to read the fine print like silver said. There is always a catch in every sort of warranty. And when you do get the paint job and the warranty info...DON'T forget to lock it in a safe with any receipt they give you. That way you'll be sure not to lose it.

I'm paying $650 including tax. That is with machine sanding and a pearl color. I've seen cars they've painted and they seem very nice. Today I saw Maaco and I was amazed at the job.The quality over here was really good. The main reason is that my paint on the car is fading bad in certain areas and I need to paint my kit. So I dont care as long as its nicely painted.
