lol. So true It'll scare kids more than entertain them!!

Anyways, I read Viss said something about fake looking cgi in the trailer. I just wanted to say the lack of seeing the aliens in the trailer is what made me see the movie; I'm not callin' ya out buddy but I didn't see too much that looked fake to me

I thought it was excellent. I don't know why but so many people bash the ending, but that's how it's supposed to be. Besides, the narration gives it a "tie in" to the movie and "tie up" story closure. I thought it worked well; though at first I was wondering the same thing s Stazi about Cruise's comment on the birds

(No, not the "combat" aluminum one)

I particularly liked the fact that all while cruise and the crazy guy were talking, you could hear the stomping and whooshing of the tripods legs above. The best attention grabber was the initial action scene and the best moment of the film was when the military intervened. everything else was fast paced and I really enjoyed it. Even though I usually get a bit tired frtom sitting too long, I wasn't even phased because I was that entertained.

Awaiting DVD release

Not only did it seem like Spielberg was borrowing from other films, but many scenes also were too strikingly close to his own material. It was like I was watching Close Encounters, Minority Report, Titanic, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Signs, etc. all crammed into one movie. Unfortunately for WOTW, it as a whole did not equal the sum of its parts.

all the big directors have signature syles. and its hard to do something 100% original now adays becuase everything has already been done. Remeber this was a remake. 1953 was long before independence day, heck Roland Emmerich had not even been born yet. So if anything id4 borrowed from the original WOTW.

And yes CATCF does look very bad, The original isnt old enough to need to be redone. I look at remakes like this.

The only reason they should do remakes is, if the orig. wasnt good, because the tecnology wasnt good enough to do it right, in the 40's it would have been imposible to film LOTR, because they didnt have cg and everything else it takes to make that story come to life. Perfect example would be star wars episode 4,5,6
Those will never be remade simply becuase they could not have been done better even with todays tecnology, look at episode 1,2,3 fun movies to watch but they dont have that "magic" the old ones do. They never have to remake the wizard of oz because it was done perfect in 1952, however WOTW was a story about aliens invading the world and destroying everything, that was imposible to film in the 50's SOOOOO it was remade. In other words some movies should be remade. and some dont need to be.

I saw it last night. I thought it was a good movie. Some parts of the movie baffled me, like how the kid survived and made it to boston, but for what it was the movie was pretty damn good.

Also, alot of people are complaining about the ending...well, isn't that how the aliens died in the book? They got wiped out by the common cold. I agree, it happened a little fast, but it wasn't bad.

Oh yeah...and They shot the scenes @ his house in Staten Island! ! W00t!! From his backyard, you can see my old mechanic's shop.

Derivative?

Do you realize how much of sci-fi is derived from WOTW originally?

I don't see how anyone who considers himself a film buff (and this isn't pointed at anyone in particular) can watch this movie and not understand how masterful Spielberg's touch (and the work of the people working for him) is. The changing in the pace of the action and exposition were really well-timed and when the audience thinks it's getting a break from the panic and terror of the Tripod onslaught, you start to feel claustrophic and paranoid, because you just KNOW that they haven't gone away. The single long take with the van as they're running from NJ is brilliant...the camera swoops in and out and around the moving vehicle, from closeups of faces to far enough from the van to get most of it in the shot (or more). I want to see the movie again just to see this scene. And writing/staging the screenplay so that you never know more about what's going on than Ray knows makes it such a personal experience; I was more tense watching this than I've been in a movie in a LONG time.

It's just...interesting to me, I've been reading comments about the movie on IMDB and elsewhere and I think it's mindbending how some people just don't get it.

Again, here we go.

Should be a different thread, but, hey, I didn't jack it.

Anyway, 1) the original movie was scary, and 2) just because a movie was made once does not mean that the original movie is the "source." The Gene Wilder movie departed a great deal from the book, which, btw, was not a musical, nor funded as part of a marketing campaign for a new line of candy. (Still a classic movie, though.)

Was the "Frankenstein" with Kenneth Brannaugh and Robert DeNiro a "remake" of the early film classic? Was "Young Frankenstein" a sequel?

Come on, people.

Anyway, wrt the "new" CATCF, Depp seems the perfect choice for the role, and Tim Burton the perfect director. His other Roald Dahl adaptation was "James and the Giant Peach," which he did pretty well. I have high hopes for CATCF, but in a way I'm not optimistic, either.

ID4 borrowed from many sources: Arthur C Clarke used the "big alien ships over all major cities" thing in "Childhood's End," which has never, to my knowledge, been adapted to film. Clarke's aliens were typical Spielberg aliens--ugly but nice. The TV miniseries "V" was the first to borrow from Clarke, this time with aliens who seemed benevolent at first, until their true form (and intentions) were revealed. Then, in ID4, the aliens show up in like fashion and go for the quick visual payoff--story not required.

Saw the movie yesterday. Pretty good except for most of the same things complained about here. Lack of periodical elaboration of worldwide events and the supernatural surival of Bobby. Everything else from special effects to some escape scenes was awesome!
