ID4 borrowed from many sources: Arthur C Clarke used the "big alien ships over all major cities" thing in "Childhood's End," which has never, to my knowledge, been adapted to film. Clarke's aliens were typical Spielberg aliens--ugly but nice. The TV miniseries "V" was the first to borrow from Clarke, this time with aliens who seemed benevolent at first, until their true form (and intentions) were revealed. Then, in ID4, the aliens show up in like fashion and go for the quick visual payoff--story not required.
