Should be a different thread, but, hey, I didn't jack it.
Anyway, 1) the original movie was scary, and 2) just because a movie was made once does not mean that the original movie is the "source." The Gene Wilder movie departed a great deal from the book, which, btw, was not a musical, nor funded as part of a marketing campaign for a new line of candy. (Still a classic movie, though.)
Was the "Frankenstein" with Kenneth Brannaugh and Robert DeNiro a "remake" of the early film classic? Was "Young Frankenstein" a sequel?
Come on, people. 
Anyway, wrt the "new" CATCF, Depp seems the perfect choice for the role, and Tim Burton the perfect director. His other Roald Dahl adaptation was "James and the Giant Peach," which he did pretty well. I have high hopes for CATCF, but in a way I'm not optimistic, either.
