Couldn't stop thinking about Signs and CEofthe3rd kind as well. It was a decent film. 3 out of 4 for me. Very good action from start to finish. Some good humor in the film as well. The engine block in Tom's kitchen was killing me bacause mine has car parts as well and the '67 fastback was. "Hey Ray what do you think? Try the solenoid."

I know the person who was hired to set up the 'car stuff' all over the house. A lot of the parts where his stuff, and almost all the car pics you see in the background are club pictures.
It's amazing how many people were involved and how much money was spent on just those scenes.

I saw a cam sitting on the table in the background of his kitchen and on a side note i liked the film, and im a big movie critic, i hate almost everything i see. But its been a pretty good year for movies. Kingdom of heaven Batman WOTW Land of the dead wasnt bad(for a zombie movie) Mr&Ms Smith just plain stunk. I saw some other crapy movies this year but i cant rememeber.

Loved it. AMAZING sound work on the tripods.

so in other words its like in the simpson episode where homer goes back in time and sneezes? All the dinosaurs just drop dead! I would have to say if that is the end of WOTW I would be pissed because SIMPSONS DID IT!

Heheheh...you're funny.
Anyway, to expand on my earlier post, I've always loved the WOTW story, so this movie fulfilled so many of my needs. One thing I didn't need was that compulsive Trekkie desire to have everything explained and tied up in neat little technobabbly bows. Alien technology is supposed to be mysterious and overwhelming, and same for their motivations. The lack of understanding why and how the machines came to be on earth and why the attack happened just adds to the horror of the situation. I thought that Spielberg absolutely nailed it. Having the entire film be based in what Ray sees and not going the ID4 route of showing scenes from around the world (except that brief and sad moment in the news van with the video) really makes the emotional impact and "you are there" realism stick hard. I haven't been this tense and on edge in a film in ages. And the sound editing...my God, the sounds from the machines would have driven me mad. I found myself at some point thinking "I think I'd rather just put a bullet in my head instead of worrying about those damn things coming over a hill for me."

sorry to bring up "old news" but we were planning on seeing this tonight. anyone take their kids to this movie? my daughter, 4, is cool with scary, gory, adult stuff to a degree...but i was curious if they showed extensive stuff. a few scary parts? mildly scary? lots of blood and guts? (human?) etc... thanks to anyone who can respond pretty quickly..

I wouldn't take a 4 year old too much for a 4 year old. I will take my 7.5 year old this one is right up his alley. Great movie as long as you don't focus on the inacuracies.

Aside from the visual/audio grandeur of seeing War of the Worlds in the theater, not much else within the movie impressed me. I simply couldn't get past the derivativeness of most of the film. Not only did it seem like Spielberg was borrowing from other films, but many scenes also were too strikingly close to his own material. It was like I was watching Close Encounters, Minority Report, Titanic, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Signs, etc. all crammed into one movie. Unfortunately for WOTW, it as a whole did not equal the sum of its parts.
P.S. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory looks like it's going to be a big pile of chocolate dung.
