Good afternoon all,

I brought my car into have the transmission checked and was told my differential is going. They said the car is changing geers fine but it does shift a little hard in reverse and overdrive. They hooked it up to something when they took it for a drive.

When you rotate the wheel it has allot of play and makes a clunking noise? I would have to guess that it can turn about 180 degrees then clunk. The clunk happens each way you turn the wheel.

Does this sound like it is the differential or a transmission problem or both?

The car is a 1998 Contour Sport automatic with the z-tec 4 cylinder and has about 160,000 KM.

Does anyone have an idea on what they will charge me to have this fixed? Canadian if possible? Unfortunately I have some knowledge of cars but for something like this not a chance.
