Not sure if I agree. College is basically a continuation of high school these days. If you take a year off, you'll enter college with a different perspective than most other students. That might not be a bad thing, but it might make it tougher to identify with most of your peers.
Plus, what kind of "stress" does an 18 year old need to unwind from?
Finally, during that year off you'll probably be tempted to start working. Once you start making money, you'll be tempted to postpone college (this almost happened to me). Either that or you'll hate the real world so much you'll jump at the chance to go to college after a year 
But I have no problem with the "sitting in a pub for a year" strategy. But I suggest that can also be done quite successfuly while IN college.
