Only if you want to tune your cams for the best power. However, removing the VCT will trip a cell and you'll need a chip to fix it or the car will run bad. It's not worth doing if it's you're sole upgrade, but if you're going to get a chip, especially one done on a dyno, it would be a good mod to get the best gains so you can tune the cams as well.

Glad you brought that up. I can just continue on this thread. I am not going to do a ton of mods but i do want to get some "sleeper" power. I was thinking a header, high flow cat, chip. Is that about it? I call them "minor" mods, but thats all i really want. I dont want a lot of noise either. My intake is loud enough . What should i do, just get a big resonator?

I might do the cams, going by what you suggested.

Don't do it. I had one ......messed up my VCT solenoid completely!

Why would that matter? Will that also mess with the engine? Or is it just once you get the VCT eliminator, there's no going back to stock witout getting a new VCT solenoid? So if you don't want to go back to stock it doesn't matter?

I FELT a loss in power. Think about it; The VCT adjusts the exhaust cam (retards it up to a certain degree) to keep emmissions down....if that is malfunctioning....it may adjust the timing enough to lose some power.

So you just added the VCT eliminator without a chip? If so, yeah you lost power. Also, in order to get the best gains, you have to add adjustible cam gears and tune them on the dyno.

I had a chip.....also I did dyno tune the cam gears. BUT.....instead of starting with around 120 HP like I had....I started with 107 HP!!!! Tuned the gears and ended up with 118 HP. Not worth anything in my opinion.

DDavis also got Gears and the eliminator and he gained 10hp with a chip. The reason you didn't see gains, I think, is because of how the cams are designed and installed.

Zetec cams have no index for the gears so there's a little play from the factory. So some will come already optomized and some won't. It's possible you've had good settings already by chance and when you added the gears you saw no gains. It's also why most settings differ from car to car. Most people, though do see gains with tuned gears.
