Hey guys, I'm just trolling, but I know you guys will know this.
My Emachines T2825 died and I want to take the hard drive that's in it and put it in an external hard drive holder. Then I can transfer data I want to keep off it to another XP machine. Then put the original HD back into my computer which will now have a new motherboard. The new MB means I'll have to reformat the drive and I'd like to keep some of that data before I do that.
1: What size is my HD? 3.5" 5.5"? I don't know, but I'm assuming it's 5.5 since it's out of a tower and not a desktop.
2: Anyone ever heard of an external hard drive enclosure like this before?
3: Can I do this?
Thanks guys, N.

1) Your hard drive is a 3.5"...only drives that were bigger were the old bigfoot drives, and they haven't been used in computers for years.
2) Yes, they sell those enclosures, should cost you roughly $20...but you can just slave the drive into your new computer and copy what you need too, unless you want the external hard drive for future storage.

1. Doesn't matter, 3.5 or 5.25 will work fine.
2. Yes, I have 3 sitting next to me... 2 have 200gb WD harddrives and 1 has a dvd burner.
3. Yes, very very easily.
Something like at these pages would probably work. You just gotta think how you want to connect it... USB2 or firewire. It really depends on what you want, I personally went USB2 since I was using a USB hub anyways and I had the open ports. I would recommend poking around and looking at what chipsets they use for the board inside of the enclosure as preformance rates will vary. But if that really isn't too important to you, cheap ones will work. Good luck!

So the hard drive is rated as the same size as "floppies"? I remember 5.25 dinosaur disks!
I want to keep the data which is already on my HDD and placed it on another computer to temporarily hold while I put that HDD back into my broken computer which will have a "new" motherboard ready to go by then. The enclosure will act as a bridge to move that data. Right now, I can't access the HDD since the old motherboard is toast.
Thanks guys by the way!

i've never seen an external drive kit that accepts 5.25" drives, well, hard drives that is.

You know that you don't have to reformat your hard drive when you replace the motherboard, right? Not usually anyhow. It's better to do so, but it's generally not required.

Just open the case and plug it into the IDE cable that goes to the CD-ROM on the other machine. Or, if it's a laptop or soemthing that doesn't work, I just got this and it's great.
