I believe there is a hose that comes off of the transmission that is a vent hose. It doesn't really go anywhere. The loose end of it should be somewhere near the battery, if I remember correctly.
Is your friend pressing the gas pedal to the floor when he is going uphill? If so, that would explain the ac cutting out. When the gas pedal is at "Wide Open Throttle", the throttle position sensor is designed to stop the ac to give a little more power to the engine. That may be what is happening.
