I just bought a 1998 Contour, 2.0L zetec 129,000 miles. I stopped at the store and ran in and came out, started the car but it would not come out of park! also the ventalation fan would not come on and no blinkers! check fuses and they are ok...all recalls were done according to FORD.

anyone else experience this problem. I can force the car out of park and drives fine but still no air or blinkers. headlights work...HELP!

thanx...

What was that solution to a symptom like this.. I rmemeber reading about it AEONS ago, in the archives.

Let me TRY to find it, or an answer on the CD.
Someone will chime in here while I am gone, though, I am sure.

Replace the fuse for your taillights in the interior fusebox. I had the same problem before and this is what it was. Turns out that the taillights activation moves the actuator that allows you to shift out of park. If you ever have the center console out someday you can see what holds the shifter in park. I'm pretty sure that is what your problem is. Hope this helps.

EDIT: You said you checked all the fuses so I guess my solution would not work. Unless you didn't check the interior fusebox. In which case, do that. It's under the dash, almost directly above where the clutch pedal would be if you had a manual transmission. There is a black knob that you push on that allows it to swing down for access. The offending fuse is located in fuse slot 24, 15 amp rating. It is the one listed under brake lamps in your owners manual. Hopefully this is your problem. If not, I spent too much time for nothing writing this post.

That's what i'm leaning towards as well, bullet....I would say check the fuses again...because I know that the turn signals and the actuator thing to get it out of park are on the same fuse.

Also...a tip...if you ever blow that fuse and dont have extras, you can stick a screwdriver under the passenger side of the console and move the lever manually...use the screwdriver to feel around, then push back....then with the other hand, shift the ATX out of park.

If you lose your turn signals, the hazards are on a different fuse, so I would use those as a signal when turning/changing lanes.

Not sure how it all ties into the fan not working though...

The turn signals and the interior fan are both running off of the same fuse. I had that same problem on my 95 mystique a few months ago. As it turned out, the fuse was okay, but the fuse connection was loose.
